The Calgary Men’s Chorus, established in 1994, is a dynamic organization dedicated to excellence in the teaching and performance of a broad spectrum of men's choral music. The Society is open to all men regardless of socio-economic status, physical ability or musical experience. We promote Canadian musicians and artists, and music written by Canadian composers and arrangers. Through choral music, we encourage a sense of community and positive self-image among gay men and lesbians and build important bridges of understanding the public. The CMC Society was incorporated as a not for profit organization in the province of Alberta on January 23, 1997.
Over the last decade, the Calgary Men’s Chorus has sought to broaden its audience and establish its place in the Calgary Arts Community while at the same time remain an important and visible component of the Gay and Lesbian community. Through our fundraising concerts for the Southern Alberta HIV Clinic (Small Change Big Changes) and the SHARP Foundation, as well as participation in the biannual Calgary Sings!; (a fundraiser for the music therapy program of Carewest), the CMC contributes on more than just an artistic level to the lives of their fellow Calgarians. During the first North American OutGames, the CMC produced Singing Out! as part of the weeklong cultural program. Joining us were the Rainbow Harmony Project (from Winnipeg), EnChor and the Knox United Church Choir, both from Calgary. This spring the CMC was honored to sing alongside the Knox United Church Choir during the affirmation service of the Knox United Church in Calgary, a member of Canada’s largest protestant denomination. In addition, CMC has often performed at the CBC Knox Carol Festival, and participated in the Alberta Choral Federation’s Choral Fest.
The CMC has performed with a number of well-known local groups including One World Drum Ensemble, the Heebee Jeebees, The Lily Quartet, and Sheri Sommerville. The CMC is has also invited newly-formed choruses—such as The Calgary Women’s Chorus (2003), Cardea (2005), and EnChor (2006)—to participate in concerts during their early years to offer them exposure to our audience and to provide them the opportunity to perform without incurring the cost of mounting a concert. The CMC belongs to GALA choruses and has traveled to participate in both the international festivals (Montreal 2004, Miami 2008) as well as the Canadian Unison Festival (Edmonton 1998, Toronto 2002, Vancouver 2006). CMC performed at Carnegie Hall in a mass choir production of When We No Longer Touch under the direction of Dr. Timothy Seelig in 2006.
2008 will see new challenges for the Chorus as we step beyond our comfort zone to perform with Flamenco Dancers during our Winter concert, and in June with a solo male contemporary dancer when the Chorus will present its first commissioned work for solo male dancer and male chorus.
